Foreign Aid Effectiveness: Evidence from Panel Data Analysis

Global Journal of Emerging Market Economies (ISSN: 0974-9101) (Sage Journals)

Author: M. Adnan Kabir

The research article aimed to look into the effectiveness of foreign aid which is an important issue that encompasses a wide range of academic fields. This study empirically investigated the effectiveness of foreign aid in reducing income inequality of the developing world and subsamples of countries from Africa, South Asia, and South America, which historically demonstrate socioeconomic and geopolitical similarities. In an attempt to recognize aid effectiveness with clarity, this study contributed to the debate in the literature to reconcile the seemingly composite effect of foreign aid on income inequality and extrapolate if the inhibitory mechanisms of institution quality have a regressing effect.

Heard it Through the Grapevine

Rise of Big Data Analytics and the Role of Human Resource Management

Author: Farzana Ashraf

Even though data-driven organizational practices have gained popularity over time, Human Resource Management (HRM) functions in many organizations are yet to embrace this. As companies have already started implementing Big Data Analytics (BDA) in several other key business functions, there -will be a great impact on the quantity and types ofjobs along with the skills needed to perform those jobs. Hence, a prodigious extent of responsibility now lies on the shoulders of HRM to connect an organization 's digital strategies to its people strategies. The focused area of this paper was to explore through theoretical lenses, how an organization can move towards data-driven HR by adopting Digital HR Planning (HRP) in order to gain competitive advantage over firms that are still practicing conventional HRM. A challenge associated with this could be how this new version of HRP can enhance employee wellbeing without invading their privacy.

Corruption in a Tax Game

Journal of Applied Business and Economics (ISSN: 1499-691X)

Authors: M. Adnan Kabir, Nazia Chowdhury and Liliping

This article is an experimental tax game in the context of Bangladesh. In particular, this research intends to investigate individuals’ behavior when they have an incentive to partake in corruption by evading taxes through paying bribes. The study finds that individuals readily choose the financially lucrative and payoff maximizing option of paying bribes, whenever possible, to mitigate the risks of getting caught. We also find that, more often than not, higher tax rate decreases wealth disclosure. Moreover, there is considerable evidence that enforcement of punishment, through the use of audits, acts as a deterrent when it comes to under-reporting wealth.

Constructing A Maqasid (Objective) Based Performance Measurement Index For Islamic Banks

International Journal of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (ISSN: 1936-6744)

Authors: Kazi Md. Tarique, Rafikul Islam, Mustafa Omar Mohamed, Dzuljastri Abdul Razak, Hamdino bin Hamdan

The current study aims to develop a Maqasid al-Shari’ah (objective of Islamic Law) based a new performance evaluation index for Islamic banks. In order to achieve the objective, the current study conducted twelve semi-structured interviews of academics and practitioners who specialize in Islamic banking and finance (IBF) to select the variables for the index. In order to validate the selected variables, a focus group discussion was arranged that consisted of five experts in IBF. Then, in order to prioritize the selected Maqasid variables, items and sub-items, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was employed. The thirty respondents included industry experts, Shari’ah scholars and academics. Lastly, an index was developed and tested on some selected Islamic banks in Malaysia and Bangladesh to rank their Maqasid based performance. The findings revealed that RHB Islamic bank ranked first among the sampled Islamic banks. Overall, Malaysian Islamic banks performed better than Bangladeshi Islamic banks. The novelty of this study lies in its contribution to the theory of Maqasid al-Shari’ah with respect to banking performance evaluation. The index is expected to assist policy makers, practitioners and other stakeholders to determine whether the performance of Islamic banks is in line with Maqasid al-Shari’ah and therefore adopt necessary policy changes accordingly.

High performance work systems and employee performance: the moderating and mediating role of power distance

Journal for Global Business Advancement

Authors: Ishraat Saira Wahid and Sheikh Ashiqurrahman Prince

The telecom industry of Bangladesh has been considered to be one of the fastest growing service sectors in the country. Due to its rapid growth and intense competition, employees play a pivotal role in the success of organisations. Culture is one of the most widely covered topics in the international business arena. It is evident that cultural differences between countries may increase or decrease the relationship between high performance work systems (HPWS) and performance. The present research aims to discover the impact that HPWS have on employees’ performance. The study has established a conceptual framework based on the knowledge gap identified. The findings indicate that HPWS have a positive impact on employee performance, and that power distance mediates and moderates the relationship between HPWS and employee performance. In light of the above evidence, the research raises the alarming issue of ‘brain drain’ regarding the Bangladeshi context.

Journal of Applied Business & Economics (ISSN: 1499-691X)

Author: Farzana Ashraf

This article provides a synthesis of the 3P approach to compensation management with a comprehensive explanation on how these approaches can affect an employee's performance at work. Through the theoretical lenses, the study looked into the 3P compensation system based on the fundamentals of paying for position, person and performance along with advantages and disadvantages of each. Subsequently, it identified different factors that are considered critical to the development of an organization's compensation policies on the basis of this 3P approach. The purchase of organic fish in Bangladesh: Safeguarding against covid-19

Cogent Business and Management (ISSN: 2331- 1975)

Authors: Sheikh Ashiqurrahman Prince and Ishraat Saira Wahid

Based on the theory of planned behaviour and cognitive dissonance, this research investigates how consumers’ consciousness of the attributes of organic fish impacts the number of opportunities to purchase such fish at a safe social distance and how the consciousness of verbal recommendations affect the relationship between the consciousness of necessary social distance to safely buy organic fish and consumers’ intention to purchase the fish. Applying these two theories and adding a new variable—social-distance purchasing—into the model, the research contributes significantly to current literature. Using a stratified random sampling, this research collected 320 data points from high, upper-middle and middle-income consumers that have been analysed through Amos Graphics and PROCESS macro in SPSS for the structural equation modelling. The findings of the research provide valuable insights to reduce the infection from COVID-19 as well as enhances the external validity and generalisability of the consumers’ organic-food purchasing behaviour research.

Adequacy of Bangladeshi Maternal/Paternal Leave Policies - Scope for Improvement since 2008

Journal of Bangladesh Studies (ISSN: 1529-0905)

Author:  Rumana Liza Anam

In Bangladesh, social norms and expectations of a patriarchal society leads to women having to shoulder the main responsibilities of parenting, at least in terms of time given to the child. This paper aims to discover the adequacy of improvements (if any) in this area, since 2008. It finds that though length of maternity leave has increased by a month to a total of four months since 2008, (and for up to 6 months for female government servants) it only applies to certain types of female employees and does not apply to various other types (e.g. female managerial employees). It also finds that there is no paternal or parental leave and looks into further implications of these facts and suggests areas for future research.  This paper is important because its findings point to steps that can be taken for the career development of women and economic growth of Bangladesh too.

Book Chapter – 2020

Title of the Chapter: Consumer Engagement and Roles for Sustainable Textiles

Title of the book: Sustainable Textile and Fashion Value Chains: Drivers, Concepts, Theories and Solutions

Author: Minhaz Uddin Ahmed

The purposes of this research are to understand the manner of consumer engagement in different phases of textile value chain, to examine if the traditional manner of engagement is detrimental to the sustainability of environment, and to identify those consumer choices that can uphold sustainable textiles. In this qualitative study, the current literature about the consumers’ involvements and roles in the textile value chain has been explored. This paper finds that consumers primarily involve in three stages of the textile value chain namely pre-consumption buying decision, in-consumption product care, and post-consumption disposal habits. The study reveals that, in general, the habit of overconsumption, and, in particular, the overconsumption of cheap, low-quality, non-durable fast fashion products distress the environmental sustainability. During consumption, certain ways of washing, drying, and pressing, and after consumption, indiscriminate throwing away of clothing are the other practices that cause depletion of resources and mounting landfills. This research presents the benefits of buying slow fashion products, sustainable ways of product care, and virtuous practices of reuse and recycling. Findings of this study may play a role in promoting sustainable textiles by developing consumer awareness and knowledge.
